It’s only been a couple of months since I started training Taekwon-do but here I am, in one of the regional tournaments offered by the city of Valencia helping my colleagues to give the best of themselves.
Although I have participated before as a coach, this time it has been totally different. When you are at the side of the ring… it’s hard to go through. I will say that from this experience I learned to contain myself and know how to keep my composure (the referees can’t see you doubt your partner’s actions even for a second). But there is also something very important in these situations; in the breaks you have only 50 seconds to give very concise advice that the other person can follow to be able to recover the fight. You are the person in charge of seeing the situation from the outside, emotions aside, and it is your responsibility to give that third-person view.
Sometimes we are overcome by complex situations that affect us emotionally. In those moments, many of us look to a friend for advice, because he/she can see the situation impartially, from the outside. That is the role of a coach.
I can say that we have been one of the best schools in the championship and I can’t wait to see myself in the ring. I know for a fact that I’m going to have good coaches.
